Massey Ferguson 04.01.62 – TRANS1 (Autotronic 5): Issue With High Speed Range Solenoid / Range 2 Solenoid Valve

The controller has detected an open circuit or a short circuit (+12 V or 0 V) on the circuit for the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53).

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) controller and the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53) for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or corrosion.

   Perform a solenoid resistance test by disconnecting the L53 solenoid and measuring resistance across its pins (an infinite reading indicates an internal open circuit, 0 ohms indicates an internal short).

   Check for related switch inconsistency fault codes (such as T161 or X485) to ensure the Range 2 switch (L57) is not sending conflicting data to the module.

   Test the voltage supply by turning the key to the ON position and probing the harness-side connector to verify the controller is sending the correct reference voltage/command signal.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Locate the Valve

   Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the gearbox and identify the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53).

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken or shorted wire in the harness, splice and heat-shrink the damaged section, or replace the affected harness pigtail.

   Replace the Solenoid

   Clean the area around the solenoid flange, remove the retaining screws/flange holding the L53 solenoid, pull the old valve out, lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid, insert the new solenoid, and tighten the retaining screws to the manufacturer's specified torque.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery, then use a diagnostic tool to clear the 04.01.62 fault code from the TRANS1 module.

   Test Drive

   Start the tractor and shift through all transmission ranges to ensure Range 2 engages smoothly and the code does not return.
