Massey Ferguson 04.01.6A – TRANS1: Issue With Range 4 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)

The controller detects an electrical fault in the solenoid circuit (open circuit, short circuit to +12 V, or short circuit to 0 V) or an inconsistency between the Range 4 position switch (L59) and the Range 4 solenoid valve (L55).

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) controller to the transmission valve block on the right-hand side of the gearbox for chafed wires, melted insulation, or loose pins at the L55 solenoid connector.

   Disconnect the L55 solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the coil pins to check for an internal open or short circuit.

   With the key ON (engine off), check the supply voltage and ground at the harness connector to ensure the Autotronic 5 module is sending the correct signal without shorting to +12V or 0V.

   Test the Range 4 position switch (L59) to ensure it is mechanically engaging and sending the correct state back to the controller.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure if required by the service manual.

   Locate the Valve

   Locate the transmission control valve block, typically mounted on the right-hand hydraulic cover of the gearbox housing. Identify the Range 4 solenoid valve (L55).

   Remove the Faulty Solenoid

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the L55 solenoid. Remove the retaining screws/flanges holding the solenoid valve to the valve block.

   Install the New Solenoid

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new valve into the block and tighten the retaining screws to the specified torque.

   Reconnect and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn the ignition on and use the tractor's diagnostic interface or a dealer tool to clear the 04.01.6A fault code.

   Calibration/Testing

   Start the tractor and perform a test drive, shifting through all ranges (specifically into Range 4) to ensure the transmission engages smoothly and the code does not return.
