Massey Ferguson 04.01.6D – TRANS1: Issue With Range 3 Engaged Switch Signal

The transmission control module is either not receiving a signal from the Range 3 switch, receiving an implausible signal, or detecting a mismatch between the commanded range and the actual engaged range switch feedback.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the Range 3 position switch for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins

   Test the Range 3 engaged switch for proper continuity when actuated using a multimeter

   Check the resistance of the Range 3 solenoid coil, as a physical shifting failure can trigger switch signal faults

   Attempt a transmission calibration (Dyna-4/Dyna-6). Standard Calibration procedure: Disengage PTO, place the tractor in neutral, release the park brake, and raise engine speed to ~1500 RPM. Raise the PowerShuttle arm and simultaneously press the differential lock switch for approximately 10 seconds to initiate the calibration mode.

   Check for secondary codes (e.g., 04.01.69) that would point to a hydraulic or solenoid actuation failure rather than the switch

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

   Locate the Switch

   Locate the Range 3 engaged switch on the transmission valve block/housing (refer to your specific model's service manual for the exact port location, as it sits alongside the Range 1, 2, and 4 switches).

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the switch. Clean the area around the switch to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Unthread the switch from the housing.

   Installation

   Thread the new Range 3 engaged switch into the transmission housing and tighten to the OEM torque specification.

   Reconnection

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

   Clear Codes & Calibrate

   Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool (such as Jaltest AGV or Massey Ferguson Wintest) to clear the 04.01.6D fault code. Perform a full transmission calibration to ensure the TCU learns the new switch's engagement point.
