Massey Ferguson 04.01.6E – TRANS1: Issue With Range 4 Engaged Switch Signal

The transmission controller is detecting an irregular, missing, or out-of-range electrical signal from the switch responsible for confirming that the transmission has successfully engaged Range 4.

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the TRANS1 module to the transmission range switches for chafed wires, rodent damage, or melted insulation.

   Disconnect the Range 4 switch and check the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals.

   Using a multimeter, test the switch for proper continuity to ensure it shows a clear open or closed circuit depending on mechanical engagement.

   Ensure there is no mechanical blockage or hydraulic pressure issue preventing the transmission from physically shifting into Range 4. (If the transmission cannot physically engage the gear, the switch will correctly report that it is not engaged).

   Prep the Machine

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, lower any implements, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

   Locate the Switch

   Locate the transmission range switch bank on the side of the transmission housing. Identify the specific switch for Range 4.

   Remove the Faulty Switch

   Disconnect the electrical pigtail/connector from the switch. Use a wrench or deep socket to unthread the switch from the transmission housing. Note: Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may weep from the port.

   Install the New Switch

   Thread the new OEM switch into the housing by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back into the new switch, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

   Test

   Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor and clear the stored 04.01.6E fault code using a diagnostic tool or the dash menu. Test drive the tractor, shifting through all ranges to ensure Range 4 engages smoothly and the code does not return.
