04.01.8F

Massey Ferguson 04.01.8F – TRANS (Transmission Control Module / ECU): Issue With Tyre Size Configuration

Issue description

The tractor's electronic system has detected an invalid, missing, or mismatched tire size parameter in its memory. The tractor relies on the exact rolling circumference of the tires to accurately calculate ground speed, manage 4WD engagement, calculate wheel slip (if equipped with radar), and optimize transmission shifting. This fault often triggers after a battery disconnect, software update, or if the tire size parameters were incorrectly modified.

Applies to these machines

  • 7714
  • 7715
  • 7715S
  • 7716
  • 7716S
  • 7718
  • 7718S
  • 7719
  • 7720
  • 7720S
  • 7722
  • 7722S
  • 7724
  • 7724S
  • 7726
  • 7726S
  • Tier 4 (2015-2021)

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the tractor's tires were recently replaced or if the wheel setup/rims were changed for different row crop spacings

  2. Access the Datatronic terminal or instrument cluster to view the currently programmed tire size and rolling circumference

  3. Read the physical tire size on the rear sidewalls and consult the tire manufacturer's spec sheet for the exact rolling circumference in millimeters

  4. Determine if the tractor recently suffered a dead battery or underwent an ECU software flash, which may have wiped the volatile memory of the TRANS module

Repair steps

  1. Turn on Ignition

Power on the tractor's electrical system without starting the engine.

  2. Access Configuration Menu

Using the Datatronic terminal (or the dashboard display menus), navigate to the Vehicle Settings or Transmission Configuration menu.

  3. Input Tire Data

Locate the "Tyre Size" or "Rolling Circumference" parameter. Enter the correct rolling circumference value (in millimeters) that matches the physical rear tires installed on the tractor.

  4. Save and Cycle Power

Save the configuration. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position, wait 30 seconds for the modules to power down and save the data, and then turn the key back ON.

  5. Clear the Code

Clear the inactive 04.01.8F fault code from the system.

  6. Radar Calibration (If Equipped)

If the tractor is equipped with radar and slip control, perform a radar calibration run in the field to synchronize the true ground speed with the newly entered tire size data. Note: If the configuration will not save or the code immediately returns, a dealer may need to use the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) to re-flash the Transmission Controller.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Transmission Control Module (TCM) / Transmission Controller ECU

Specific OEM part numbers for the 7700 series TCM vary heavily by exact transmission type—Dyna-4, Dyna-6, or Dyna-VT—and require the tractor's serial number to source accurately via an AGCO dealer.
