Massey Ferguson 04.01.95 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 1 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 1 (TRANS1)

The transmission control system has detected an incoherence or mismatch between the Range 1 solenoid valve (L52) and the corresponding Range 1 position sensor/switch. The system expects the switch state to match the commanded state of the solenoid. When they do not correspond, the system flags this error, which typically results in the tractor disengaging all ranges for 6 seconds (coasting) and re-engaging the previous range, or locking out the affected range entirely.

   Verify Connectors: Check that the connectors for the 4 solenoid valves and 4 range position sensors are plugged into the correct locations on the right side of the transmission.

   Inspect Wiring & Harness: Check the contacts, harness connections, and wiring going to the Range 1 solenoid (L52) and the Range 1 switch for damage, corrosion, or an open/short circuit (+12V or 0V).

   Check Fuses: Inspect transmission control fuses F4 and F29.

   Test the Solenoid (L52): Measure the resistance across Pin 1 (+12V) and Pin 2 (Earth) of the solenoid valve. At ambient temperature, the resistance should be approximately 9.7 Ohms. Verify the solenoid draws the correct current when activated (specification is ~1A).

   Test the Switch: Verify that the Range 1 engaged switch is sending the correct continuity signal (NC: 0 V) when the range is physically engaged.

   Park and Prep

   Park the tractor on a level surface, move the PowerControl lever to the neutral position, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

   Locate Components

   Locate the transmission valve block on the right-hand side of the transmission housing. Identify the Range 1 Solenoid (L52) and the corresponding Range 1 position switch.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short or open circuit in the harness, repair the damaged wiring or replace the connector pigtail.

   Replace the Faulty Component

   If the solenoid failed the resistance test: Remove the retaining nut/bolt, slide the old solenoid coil off the valve stem (or unthread the cartridge valve depending on the exact block revision), and install the new OEM solenoid. If the switch failed: Unthread the faulty range position switch from the transmission housing and install the new switch.

   System Reset

   Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition on. To reset the Autotronic 5 system, ensure the PowerControl lever is in the neutral position, then press and release the clutch pedal.

   Clear Codes

   Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 04.01.95 fault code from the TRANS1 module and test drive the tractor through all ranges to verify the repair.
