Massey Ferguson 04.01.96 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 2 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 2 (TRANS1)

This fault code indicates a malfunction or discrepancy in the transmission's Range 2 circuit. The controller is detecting an issue with either the electrical signal from the Range 2 Engaged Switch (which confirms the gear range is physically engaged) or the Range 2 Solenoid (which hydraulically actuates the shift into Range 2).

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors running from the TRANS1 module to the transmission side cover for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Perform a solenoid coil resistance test by unplugging the Range 2 Solenoid and measuring resistance across the coil pins (look for an open circuit or dead short).

   Test the Range 2 Engaged Switch for continuity (it should show continuity only when Range 2 is physically engaged).

   Check for a sticking spool valve inside the transmission control block or mechanical binding preventing the shift fork from fully engaging Range 2.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, lower all implements, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

   Access the Valve Block

   Locate the transmission control valve block (usually mounted on the right-hand side of the transmission housing). Clean the area thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

   Remove the Faulty Component

   If the solenoid is faulty: Disconnect the electrical plug. Remove the retaining bolt holding the Range 2 solenoid valve in place and carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve block. If the switch is faulty: Disconnect the switch wiring and unthread the switch from the transmission housing.

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid or switch with clean transmission fluid. Seat the new component fully into the bore before tightening the retaining bolt or threading. Do not force it, as this can damage the O-rings.

   Reassembly & Testing

   Reconnect the electrical harnesses, reconnect the battery, and clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool. Start the tractor and cycle through the transmission ranges to ensure Range 2 engages smoothly without throwing the 04.01.96 code.
