Massey Ferguson 04.01.99 – TRANS2: Issue With Powershift P Solenoid Supply Voltage (TRANS2)

Issue description

The transmission control system has detected an abnormal electrical condition—such as an open circuit, short circuit, or out-of-range voltage—on the power supply circuit dedicated to the Powershift "P" solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Trace the wiring harness from the TRANS2 module to the Powershift P Solenoid for chafed wires, pinched lines, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the Powershift P Solenoid and the TRANS2 module to inspect pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back terminals.

  3. With the key ON, use a multimeter to measure the supply voltage at the solenoid connector to verify if the TRANS2 module is sending the correct voltage.

  4. Measure the internal resistance of the Powershift P Solenoid to check for an internally shorted coil.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Always disconnect the tractor's battery before servicing transmission electrical components to prevent module damage.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken or shorted wire in the transmission harness, splice and seal the damaged section using weather-resistant heat shrink, or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Clean Connections

If connectors are corroded, clean the pins thoroughly with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease before reconnecting.

  4. Replace the Solenoid

If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the resistance test, locate the Powershift P Solenoid on the transmission valve block. Remove the retaining hardware, extract the faulty solenoid, and install the replacement part. Ensure the mounting surface is clean and O-rings are lubricated with clean transmission fluid.

  5. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the 04.01.99 code from the TRANS2 module. Test drive the tractor, shifting through the powershift ranges to ensure the code does not return.
