Massey Ferguson 04.01.9D – TRANS2: Transmission Input Shaft Speed Sensor Calibration Fault

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected an issue with the calibration values of the input shaft speed sensor. The sensor's signal may be out of the expected range, or a recent transmission calibration routine failed to complete successfully due to erratic readings or improper conditions (such as incorrect oil temperature).

Check the cause

  1. Verify the sensor is actually faulty by checking the wiring harness and connector for the input shaft speed sensor. Look for corrosion, moisture, or broken wires.

  2. Check the sensor gap and inspect the tone ring for damage or debris.

  3. Ensure the transmission oil is between 35°C (95°F) and 45°C (113°F) before attempting to recalibrate.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect the tractor's battery.

  2. Locate the transmission input shaft speed sensor.

    Often located near the PTO shaft/transmission housing where access can be tight.

  3. Thoroughly clean the mounting area.

    This prevents dirt from entering the transmission.

  4. Remove the old sensor and install the new OEM sensor.

    Ensure the correct gap is maintained.

  5. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Position the tractor on flat ground, place the transmission in neutral, and release the park brake.

  7. Warm up the transmission oil until it is between 35°C (95°F) and 45°C (113°F).

    You can engage the PTO to help warm it up.

  8. Activate the PowerShuttle (forward and reverse) 10 times in each direction for 5–10 seconds.

    This warms up the control units and solenoid valves.

  9. Configure the PowerShuttle progressivity settings to "0" on the dash.

  10. Disengage the PTO and raise the engine speed to approximately 1500 RPM.

  11. Raise the PowerShuttle arm to the raised position (left of the steering wheel) and hold it there while simultaneously pressing the differential lock switch.

    Hold for about 10 seconds until the transmission gear screen displays "Ct".

  12. Place the PowerShuttle arm into the forward position to begin the calibration.

    The process takes approximately 10 minutes, during which you will hear the transmission shifting.

  13. Wait for the screen to display the transmission ratio.

    This indicates the calibration is complete.

  14. Save the settings.

    Place the PowerShuttle into neutral, disengage the differential lock, idle the tractor down, and switch the engine off.

  15. Restart the tractor and test drive.

    Use a variety of maneuvers to validate smooth shifting.
