Massey Ferguson 04.01.A4 – TRANS: Issue With Transmission Actuator Internal Position Sensor
Issue description
The sensor responsible for monitoring the physical position of the transmission actuator is sending an irregular, out-of-range, or missing signal to the controller.

Check the cause
Check CAN BUS communication to verify that the transmission controller is communicating properly with the actuator (look for related code 04.01.B0).
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission actuator for chafing, breaks, or short circuits. Ensure the connector is seated tightly and free of moisture or corrosion.
Check for related codes such as 04.01.A1, 04.01.A2, or 04.01.B1 to isolate if the issue is purely the sensor or a mechanical failure of the actuator itself.
Attempt a transmission/clutch calibration using the tractor's diagnostic interface to see if the sensor can relearn its position limits.
Repair steps
Power Down
Safely park the tractor, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the Actuator
Locate the transmission actuator assembly on the DYNA VT transmission housing.
Remove the Actuator
Disconnect the electrical harness from the actuator. Unbolt the actuator assembly from the transmission block. Because the position sensor is internal to the actuator, the entire actuator assembly usually needs to be removed if the sensor has failed.
Install the Replacement
Mount the new transmission actuator assembly and torque the mounting bolts to the specifications outlined in the Massey Ferguson workshop manual.
Reconnect and Calibrate
Reconnect the wiring harness. Reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes and Test
Use a compatible diagnostic tool (such as Jaltest AGV or Massey Ferguson dealer software) to clear the 04.01.A4 fault code from the TRANS module. You must perform a transmission actuator calibration procedure so the TCU can learn the new internal position sensor's end-stops.
Parts you might need
(1)Transmission Actuator Assembly (with Internal Position Sensor) / DYNA VT Actuator
Ensure the part is specifically ordered for the DYNA VT transmission, as parts differ significantly from the Dyna-4 and Dyna-6 transmission variants.
