04.01.E4

Massey Ferguson 04.01.E4 – TRANS: Transmission Internal Software Issue (TRANS)

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected an internal logic error, software corruption, or a failure in its internal processing that prevents it from operating the transmission correctly.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the tractor's battery voltage and the main power/ground pins at the TRANS module harness to rule out low voltage or spikes.

  2. Ensure the CAN network lines to the transmission controller are intact and not shorting out.

  3. Connect the AGCO/Massey Ferguson Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) to see if the TRANS module is still communicating on the network or if it has bricked itself, and check the current software version.

Repair steps

  1. Stabilize Voltage

Connect a battery maintainer to the tractor to ensure a steady voltage supply (usually around 12.5V - 13.5V) during diagnostic and programming procedures.

  2. Attempt a Software Flash (Update)

Using the Massey Ferguson EDT, navigate to the TRANS module and attempt to re-flash or update the module with the latest OEM software.

  3. Clear and Retest

After the flash is complete, clear the 04.01.E4 code. Cycle the tractor's key and verify if the code returns.

  4. Module Replacement (If Necessary)

If the EDT cannot communicate with the module, the flash fails, or the code immediately returns after a successful update, the internal memory/processor of the TRANS module has physically failed. The module must be replaced.

  5. Calibration

If a new Transmission Control Module is installed, you must use the EDT to program the module to the tractor's specific VIN/configuration and perform a full transmission calibration (clutch fill times, bite points, etc.) before the tractor can be driven.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Transmission Control Module (TRANS / TCU)

Varies heavily by exact transmission build (Dyna-4, Dyna-6, or Dyna-VT). You must use the tractor's serial number in the AGCO Parts Book to obtain the exact module part number. A used or replacement module is not plug-and-play. It requires dealer-level software (EDT) to flash the correct firmware and calibrate the transmission to the tractor.
