Massey Ferguson 04.01.EE – TRANS: Transmission Calibration Issue

Issue description

This code indicates that the transmission control system has lost its calibration parameters, or the current calibration is out of specification, resulting in harsh, jerky, or erratic shifting (especially when using the PowerShuttle to change directions).

Applies to these machines

  • 7714
  • 7715
  • 7715S
  • 7716
  • 7716S
  • 7718
  • 7718S
  • 7719
  • 7720
  • 7720S
  • 7722
  • 7722S
  • 7724
  • 7724S
  • 7726
  • 7726S
  • Tier 4 (2015-2021)

Check the cause

  1. Verify transmission oil temperature is between 35°C (95°F) and 45°C (113°F) via the Dash Control Center on diagnostic screen 1.

  2. Warm up the tractor through normal operation (engaging the PTO can help aid in warming up the transmission fluid).

  3. Prime components by activating the PowerShuttle (forward and reverse) 10 times in each direction for 5 to 10 seconds to warm up control units and solenoid valves.

  4. Reset PowerShuttle progressivity settings all to 0 on the left-hand dash screen to ensure a neutral baseline for calibration.

  5. If calibration repeatedly fails or aborts, inspect the transmission solenoid, switch, or joystick controller for hardware failure as these can prevent successful calibration completion.

Repair steps

  1. Position tractor

Position the tractor on flat, level ground.

  2. Prepare tractor for calibration

Disengage the PTO, place the transmission in neutral, and release the Park brake.

  3. Adjust engine speed

Raise the engine speed to approximately 1500 RPM.

  4. Initiate calibration mode

Raise the PowerShuttle arm to the 'raised' position (located to the left of the steering wheel) and hold it there while simultaneously pressing the differential lock switch.

  5. Hold controls

Hold both for approximately 10 seconds until the right-hand transmission gear screen on the dash displays 'Ct'.

  6. Begin calibration sequence

Once 'Ct' is displayed, place the PowerShuttle arm into the forward position to begin the calibration sequence.

  7. Wait for calibration

The screen will continuously show 'Ct' for about 10 minutes. Note: It is completely normal to hear the transmission shifting and making hydraulic noises during this automated process.

  8. Verify completion

Once calibration is complete, the right-hand screen will display the transmission ratio you were in before starting (e.g., '1A/2A' or '1E/2E').

  9. Save settings

Place the PowerShuttle into the neutral position, disengage the differential lock, idle the tractor down, and switch the engine off to confirm and save the new changes.

  10. Test drive

Restart the tractor and test drive using a variety of maneuvers (forward to reverse, neutral to forward, etc.) to validate that the shifting is smooth and the code has cleared.
