Massey Ferguson 04.02.0B – Transmission Control Module (TCU) / Autotronic 5: Forward Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue

Issue description

The transmission control module has detected an abnormal electrical current (amperage draw) on the circuit responsible for operating the Forward Clutch Solenoid. The measured current is either too high, too low, or outside the expected calibration parameters.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the Forward Clutch Solenoid (TR23 or TR25) wiring harness and connector for rubbed-through wires, melted insulation, or water/dirt ingress causing poor pin contact.

  2. Perform a resistance test across the two pins of the solenoid coil using a multimeter to check for an internal open (infinite resistance) or short (near 0 ohms).

  3. Test the wiring harness for continuity, short-to-ground, and short-to-power (+12V) from the solenoid connector back to the Autotronic 5 module.

  4. Check transmission fluid level and condition, as severely degraded fluid can cause solenoids to overheat and fail prematurely.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, lower all implements, and turn off the ignition. Disconnect the negative battery terminal to protect the Autotronic 5 module.

  2. Access the Valve Block

Locate the transmission side cover/valve block where the directional solenoids are housed. Clean the surrounding area thoroughly with brake cleaner to prevent dirt from entering the transmission hydraulic circuit.

  3. Remove the Faulty Solenoid

Disconnect the electrical plug from the Forward Clutch Solenoid. Remove the retaining bolt or snap-ring holding the solenoid in the valve body. Gently twist and pull the solenoid straight out.

  4. Install the New Solenoid

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean Massey Ferguson transmission fluid. Carefully push the new solenoid into the bore until fully seated. Reinstall the retaining bolt/clip.

  5. Reconnect and Reassemble

Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibration

Clear the stored 04.02.0B fault code. You must perform a transmission clutch calibration (often referred to as a Dyna-4/Dyna-6 calibration) using the tractor's dash menus or dealer software to ensure the Autotronic 5 learns the engagement profile of the new solenoid.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Forward Clutch Solenoid (PowerShuttle Forward Proportional Solenoid Valve or TR23/TR25)

Exact AGCO part numbers vary based on the specific transmission (Dyna-4 vs. Dyna-6) and tractor serial number. Order AGCO Genuine Parts via an authorized dealer. Always replace O-rings. Do not use aftermarket solenoids.
