Massey Ferguson 04.02.0F – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue

Issue description

The transmission controller is measuring the electrical current (amp draw) from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit and has detected that it falls outside the expected parameters. Typically, if the current draw is lower than the specified limit, it indicates that the circuit is open, shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply.

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the reverse clutch solenoid is actually receiving voltage and energizing when the reverse gear/shuttle is selected.

  2. Check the wiring harness running from the TRANS1 module to the reverse clutch solenoid for rubbed wires, pinched harnesses, or exposed copper that could cause a short to ground.

  3. Disconnect the solenoid and inspect the electrical connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or loose terminals, which can cause a drop in amp draw.

  4. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance (Ohms) across the reverse clutch solenoid coil. If the coil is open (infinite resistance) or shorted internally, the solenoid itself is the culprit and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the transmission system.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission valve block (usually on the side of the transmission housing) and identify the specific reverse clutch solenoid valve.

  3. Disconnect Electricals

    Carefully unplug the wiring harness connector from the faulty solenoid.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

    Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Unbolt or unscrew the faulty solenoid valve from the transmission block.

  5. Install the New Part

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new OEM solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Install the new solenoid into the valve block and torque it to the manufacturer's specifications.

  6. Reconnect and Test

    Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn on the tractor, clear the stored 04.02.0F fault code using a diagnostic tool, and perform a functional test of the forward/reverse shuttle to ensure the clutch engages smoothly and the code does not return.
