Massey Ferguson 04.02.12 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue
Issue description
This indicates that the transmission controller has detected an abnormal electrical current (amperage) draw on the circuit responsible for the reverse clutch solenoid. This condition is typically caused by an internal short within the solenoid coil, a short-to-ground in the wiring harness, or a severely corroded connection causing resistance to fall out of the expected operating range.

Check the cause
Trace the wiring harness from the TRANS1 module to the transmission valve block. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to ground.
Disconnect the reverse clutch solenoid. Inspect the pins on both the harness side and the solenoid side for bent pins, moisture, or corrosion.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the pins of the reverse clutch solenoid coil. Compare this reading to the forward clutch solenoid. If the reverse solenoid shows an open circuit (infinite resistance) or a dead short (near 0 ohms), the coil has failed internally.
With the key ON (and following all safety protocols to ensure the tractor cannot move), verify that the TRANS1 module is sending the correct voltage to the solenoid when the shuttle lever is placed in reverse.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a flat, level surface. Engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and remove the key. Chock the wheels to prevent any unexpected movement.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing and identify the reverse clutch solenoid.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the solenoid. Remove the retaining nut/bolt that secures the solenoid coil to the valve stem. Slide the faulty coil off (or remove the entire cartridge valve if replacing the whole assembly).
Installation
Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut. Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring it clicks into place and is routed away from moving parts or heat sources.
Clear Codes
Connect a diagnostic tool to the tractor and clear the 04.02.12 fault code from the TRANS1 module.
Transmission Calibration
After replacing a transmission solenoid, you must perform a transmission clutch calibration. Note: The transmission fluid must be at normal operating temperature (typically between 95°F and 113°F) for the calibration routine to execute. If the oil is too cold, the tractor's computer will reject the calibration attempt.
