Massey Ferguson 04.02.13 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Open Circuit

Issue description

The transmission controller measures the current draw from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls below a specific limit, the system flags it as an "open circuit". This means there is a break in the electrical path, which could be caused by a broken wire, a disconnected plug, a loss of power supply, or a failed internal coil within the solenoid itself.

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the tractor is securely parked, the engine is off, and the wheels are blocked so the tractor cannot move unexpectedly during testing.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission's forward/reverse solenoid block. Look for chafed wires, broken connections, or a loose/corroded connector plug.

  3. Using a digital multimeter, test for an open circuit by checking the continuity of the wires running from the TRANS1 controller to the solenoid connector.

  4. Verify that the reverse clutch solenoid circuit is receiving power (typically 12 volts) when the reverse shuttle/mode is commanded.

  5. Set your multimeter to the Ohms setting and test the pins on the solenoid itself. If the reading shows infinite resistance, the internal coil has failed (open circuit) and the solenoid must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Ensure the tractor is turned off, the parking brake is engaged, and the wheels are chocked.

  2. Locate the forward/reverse solenoid valve block on the transmission housing.

  3. Carefully disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the reverse clutch solenoid.

  4. Remove the retaining hardware (bolts or nut) securing the solenoid to the valve block.

  5. Remove the old solenoid and install the new replacement solenoid valve.

  6. Secure the retaining hardware and reconnect the electrical connector.

  7. Start the tractor and use a diagnostic tool to clear the stored 04.02.13 fault code from the TRANS1 module.

  8. Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure to ensure the transmission controller learns the engagement profile of the new solenoid for smooth shifting.
