04.02.42

Massey Ferguson 04.02.42 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Transmission Hydrostatic Speed/Direction Sensor Issue (TRANS) / Transmission Output Speed Sensor Issue (TRANS)

Issue description

This code indicates that the transmission control module is receiving an implausible, missing, or out-of-range signal from the transmission speed/direction sensor. When it fails, the transmission may shift roughly, fail to find the right gear, or cause the speedometer to act erratically.

Check the cause

  1. Check the sensor's electrical connector and wiring harness for rub points, corrosion, or moisture ingress

  2. Test the circuit for an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power

  3. Use Massey Ferguson's Wintest diagnostic software to monitor live data from the forward speed, engine speed, and intermediate speed sensors to confirm the signal is dropping out

  4. Ensure transmission oil levels are correct and filters are not blocked, as severe hydraulic issues can sometimes cause secondary speed sensor faults

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Disconnect Power

Always disconnect the battery before starting work to prevent electrical damage to the transmission controller.

  3. Locate the Sensor

The transmission speed sensor is typically accessible from underneath the tractor, mounted on the transmission input or output shaft housing.

  4. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the sensor mounting area and the electrical connector to prevent dirt from entering the transmission housing when the sensor is removed.

  5. Remove the Sensor

Disconnect the electrical connector and unbolt/remove the old sensor.

  6. Install the New Sensor

Insert the new direct-replacement sensor (no modifications should be needed). Secure it and reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Restore Power and Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 04.02.42 fault code from the TRANS module.

  8. Test Drive

Operate the tractor to ensure smooth shifting and verify that the speedometer reads accurately.
