Massey Ferguson 04.02.44 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS): Issue With Signal From Transmission Mounted Engine Speed Sensor (TRANS)

Issue description

The control module is receiving an erratic, missing, or out-of-range signal from the engine speed sensor that is physically mounted on the transmission housing.

Check the cause

  1. Connect the tractor to the Wintest diagnostic software and monitor the sensor values. If the values are correct, the sensor itself is likely not the issue.

  2. If Wintest does not detect a value or the problem is intermittent, test the sensor using a multimeter. Check the resistance value of the sensor when the tractor is stationary.

  3. Ensure that the connections on all plugs (especially on the Autotronic box/transmission module) are completely clean and tight, as poor connections frequently cause signal faults.

  4. Using a diagnostic harness, verify that the sensor is receiving the correct voltage (typically switching between 0V and 14V depending on the sensor state/activation).

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

Identify the engine speed sensor mounted on the transmission housing. Depending on the specific tractor model (e.g., 6400/7700 series), accessing this sensor may require removing the rear tyre.

  2. Prepare for Fluid Loss

Partially drain the transmission fluid if the sensor is mounted below the fluid line to prevent spills.

  3. Remove the Sensor

Disconnect the electrical harness. Carefully remove the mounting bolts (be prepared for seized bolts if the tractor has been in the field for years) and extract the sensor.

  4. Install the New Sensor

Insert the replacement sensor, tighten the bolts to OEM torque specs, and reconnect the wiring harness.

  5. Refill and Clear Codes

Top off the transmission fluid if any was drained. Use the diagnostic tool to clear the 04.02.44 fault code and run the tractor to ensure the code does not return.
