Massey Ferguson 04.02.48 – Transmission Control Unit (TRANS): Transmission Range Has Not Moved To Neutral

Indicates a mechanical or electrical failure where the transmission's electronic range change mechanism fails to return to the neutral position when commanded by the operator or the automated system.

   Inspect the Range Change Solenoids: Range changes are performed electronically via a bank of solenoids located on the side of the transmission. If the tractor refuses to shift ranges or move, these solenoids are the primary suspects.

   Inspect the Transmission Range Switches: The electronic switches linked to the solenoids can also fail, preventing the system from recognizing that the transmission has physically moved to neutral.

   Attempt a Transmission Calibration: Sometimes the transmission control module loses its stored values. Attempting a calibration can help determine if the issue is a hard part failure or a software/calibration desync.

   Locate and Replace Faulty Components

   Access the side of the transmission to locate the bank of range change solenoids and switches. Test for continuity and voltage. Replace the faulty solenoid or transmission range switch as necessary.

   Initiate Calibration Mode

   Once parts are replaced, hold the required dash buttons for approximately 10 seconds until the right-hand instrument panel (the transmission gear screen) displays "Ct".

   Run Calibration

   Place the PowerShuttle arm into the forward position to begin the process. The screen will continuously show "Ct" for about 10 minutes. It is normal to hear the transmission shifting and making noises during this time.

   Complete Calibration

   Once finished, the screen will display the transmission ratio you were in before starting (e.g., "1A/2A").

   Save Settings

   Place the PowerShuttle into the neutral position, disengage the differential lock, idle the tractor down, and switch the engine off to confirm and save the new changes.

   Validate Repair

   Restart the tractor and drive it back and forth using a variety of maneuvers (forward to reverse, neutral to forward, etc.) to ensure the transmission shifts smoothly and finds neutral without throwing the 04.02.48 code.
