Massey Ferguson 04.02.50 – TRANS: Transmission Filter Blocked (TRANS)
Issue description
The transmission/hydraulic oil filter has become restricted or clogged with debris. When the filter is blocked, the pump struggles to force oil through it, causing a pressure differential that triggers the transmission filter blockage sensor.

Check the cause
Check transmission/hydraulic fluid levels and condition to verify correct level and temperature
Listen for whining, rumbling, or growling noises from the transmission or hydraulic pump, which indicates the pump is struggling against a clogged filter
Inspect for internal wear, as worn brake linings or clutch material shedding into the oil is a common cause of premature filter blockage
Verify the transmission filter blockage sensor and its wiring haven't failed (look for related codes like 04.02.49 or 04.02.56)
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow the transmission fluid to cool.
Locate the Filters
Depending on the transmission type (e.g., Dyna-VT or Dyna-6), locate the transmission filters. There is typically a main external high-pressure oil filter on the right-hand side of the transmission housing, and/or a top-of-tank filter.
Drain/Catch Fluid
Place a suitable drain pan underneath the filter housing to catch any hydraulic/transmission fluid that escapes during removal.
Remove the Filter
Unscrew the spin-on filter or remove the filter housing cover to extract the internal filter element.
Inspect for Debris
Inspect the old filter element for heavy metal shavings or fibrous brake lining material. If heavy debris is found, a larger transmission or brake teardown may be required.
Install New Filter
Lubricate the new filter's O-ring or gasket with clean transmission fluid. Install the new filter and tighten to the manufacturer's specifications.
Refill and Test
Top up the transmission/hydraulic fluid to the correct level. Start the tractor, check the filter housing for leaks, and verify that the dashboard warning light and the 04.02.50 fault code have cleared.
