Massey Ferguson 04.02.54 – TRANS2: Transmission Temperature Signal Out Of Range (TRANS2)
Issue description
The transmission fluid temperature sensor is sending an implausible signal (voltage too high or too low) to the control module. This typically indicates an open circuit, a short circuit to ground/power, or a complete internal failure of the temperature sensor itself. Without accurate temperature data, the transmission cannot properly regulate hydraulic pressure, shift timing, or cooling system engagement, which can result in rough shifts, delayed engagement, or the tractor entering a protective "limp mode".

Check the cause
Trace the wiring harness from the transmission temperature sensor back to the TRANS2 module, looking for rub points, pinched wires, or melted insulation
Disconnect the sensor plug and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the sensor's pins. An open circuit (infinite resistance) or a dead short (zero resistance) indicates internal failure
Verify that the transmission fluid is at the correct level and not severely degraded
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Allow the transmission to cool to avoid burns from hot hydraulic/transmission fluid.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the transmission temperature sensor on the side of the transmission housing (refer to your specific model's service manual for the exact port location).
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical harness connector from the sensor.
Removal
Place a clean catch pan underneath the sensor area to catch any escaping transmission fluid. Use a wrench or deep socket to carefully unscrew the sensor from the transmission housing.
Installation
Thread the new OEM transmission temperature sensor into the port by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Reconnect & Top Off
Reconnect the electrical harness. Check the transmission fluid level and top off any fluid lost during the swap.
Clear Codes
Turn the ignition on and use a diagnostic tool (or the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu) to clear the 04.02.54 fault code. Test drive the tractor to ensure smooth shifting and verify the code does not return.
