Massey Ferguson 04.02.62 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 2 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)

Issue description

The transmission controller detects an electrical fault (open circuit, short circuit to +12V, or short circuit to 0V) on the Range 2 solenoid valve circuit. It can also indicate an inconsistency between the Range 2 switch and the Range 2 solenoid valve.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the Range 2 solenoid valve on the transmission valve block for severe rust, physical damage, or fluid ingress

  2. Perform an electrical resistance test on the Range 2 solenoid coil (expected value is approximately 7.2 Ω ± 7%). An out-of-limits or zero reading indicates an internal fault

  3. Check the wiring harness between the solenoid connector and the TRANS1 controller for continuity, short circuits to ground, or short circuits to a +12V power source

  4. Verify the operation of the Range 2 switch in the cab to ensure there is no inconsistency between the switch command and the solenoid state

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent short circuits.

  2. Access the Valve Block

Remove any shielding or panels necessary to access the transmission control valve block.

  3. Remove the Faulty Solenoid

Disconnect the wiring harness from the Range 2 solenoid valve. Clean the area around the valve to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Unbolt/unscrew the retaining mechanism and carefully pull the solenoid valve out of the block.

  4. Install the New Solenoid

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new valve into the block and torque the retaining bolts to the manufacturer's specification.

  5. Reconnect and Reassemble

Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks into place and is free of moisture. Reinstall any removed panels.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use a diagnostic tool (or the tractor's onboard diagnostic display) to clear the 04.02.62 fault code. Test drive the tractor to ensure Range 2 engages smoothly without throwing the code again.
