Massey Ferguson 04.02.69 – Transmission Controller (TRANS1): Issue With Range 3 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)

The transmission controller detects an electrical fault or operational inconsistency with the Range 3 solenoid valve (L54), such as an open circuit, short circuit to +12 V or 0 V, or an inconsistency between the Range 3 position switch (L58) and the Range 3 solenoid valve command.

   Inspect the wiring harness on the right-hand side of the gearbox leading to the Range 3 solenoid valve (L54) for chafing, breaks, or melted insulation.

   Test the L54 solenoid circuit with a multimeter at the connector for an open circuit or a short to ground/power (+12V).

   Check the Range 3 position switch (L58) to verify it is functioning correctly and not stuck, as an inconsistency between the valve and switch can trigger this code.

   Ensure the main harness connectors at the Autotronic 5 transmission controller are seated tightly and free of corrosion.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure if required by your specific model's manual.

   Locate the Valve

   Access the right-hand side of the gearbox where the range control selector rails and solenoid valves (L52, L53, L54, L55) are mounted. Identify the Range 3 solenoid valve (L54).

   Disconnect Electricals

   Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the L54 solenoid valve.

   Remove the Valve

   Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the solenoid valve in place. Pull the solenoid valve straight out of the valve block. Have a rag ready to catch any minor transmission fluid drips.

   Install the New Valve

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the block, ensuring it seats fully.

   Secure and Reconnect

   Reinstall the retaining flange and tighten the screws to the OEM torque specification. Reconnect the electrical connector.

7. 7

   Clear Codes and Test

   Turn on the tractor, access the diagnostic interface on the dash/terminal, and clear the fault codes. Test drive the tractor, shifting through all ranges to ensure Range 3 engages smoothly and the code does not return.
