Massey Ferguson 04.02.6C – TRANS1: Issue With Range 2 Engaged Switch Signal

This code indicates that the transmission controller is not receiving the expected electrical signal from the Range 2 position switch. When the transmission attempts to shift into Range 2, the system relies on this switch to confirm that the mechanical shift has successfully occurred. A failure here can result in the tractor refusing to shift between ranges, getting stuck in a gear, or refusing to move altogether.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission range switches on the side of the transmission housing for chafed wires, moisture ingress, or corrosion inside the connector

   Ensure that the connectors for the four range position sensors and the four range solenoid valves have not been accidentally swapped or plugged into the wrong ports during previous maintenance

   Use a multimeter to check the Range 2 switch for continuity in its open and closed positions to verify if the internal contacts have failed

   Check the Range 2 solenoid for heavy rust or physical degradation, which is a common failure point that can prevent the gear from engaging and trigger the switch signal fault

   Locate the Switch

   Locate the bank of transmission range switches and solenoids on the side of the transmission housing.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the switch to prevent dirt or debris from entering the transmission housing when the sensor is removed.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical harness connector from the Range 2 engaged switch.

   Remove the Switch

   Unscrew and remove the faulty switch from the transmission block.

   Install the New Part

   Thread the new transmission range switch into the port and tighten it to the OEM torque specification.

   Reconnect and Test

   Reconnect the weather-sealed electrical harness. Clear the 04.02.6C fault code from the TRANS1 module using a diagnostic tool, then test drive the tractor to ensure it shifts smoothly into Range 2 without throwing the code.
