Massey Ferguson 04.02.6D – TRANS1: Issue With Range 3 Engaged Switch Signal
Issue description
The transmission control unit is not receiving the correct electrical signal from the Range 3 position switch. This means the controller cannot verify whether the transmission has successfully physically engaged into Range 3. This typically results in the tractor failing to shift into that range, skipping the range, or defaulting to a protective "limp mode."

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Range 3 switch on the transmission housing for chafed wires, broken connections, or corrosion inside the connector plug.
Remove the switch and test it with a multimeter to verify that the circuit properly opens and closes when the plunger is manually depressed.
Verify that the Range 3 shift solenoid is functioning (if the solenoid fails to physically move the transmission into Range 3, the switch will never be triggered).
Ensure there is no internal mechanical binding or debris preventing the shift rail/fork from fully engaging Range 3.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the Switch
Locate the Range 3 engaged switch on the side of the transmission housing. (Dyna-4 and Dyna-6 transmissions utilize a bank of these plunger switches for the different ranges).
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the switch with brake cleaner or compressed air to prevent dirt from falling into the transmission housing.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical pigtail connector. Use a deep socket or wrench to unthread the faulty switch from the transmission block.
Installation
Thread the new OEM switch into the housing. Tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten, as the switch body can be fragile).
Reconnection
Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather-pack seal clicks firmly into place.
Calibration/Clearing
Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and use the tractor's dash interface or a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 04.02.6D fault code.
Test Drive
Start the tractor and cycle the transmission through all ranges, paying specific attention to the shift into Range 3 to ensure the code does not return.
