Massey Ferguson 04.02.8A – Transmission Control Unit (TRANS): Issue With Signal Voltage From Clutch Pedal Sensor

The controller is receiving an implausible, out-of-range, or missing electrical voltage signal from the clutch pedal position sensor (often designated as sensor X68). The signal may be shorted to ground, shorted to a +12V power source, or suffering from an open circuit.

   Visually inspect the clutch pedal sensor (X68) and the physical linkage/fork for mechanical damage or binding.

   Disconnect the sensor harness and check the connector for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins.

   Use a multimeter to test the wiring harness between the clutch pedal sensor and the Transmission ECU for continuity issues, shorts to ground, or shorts to a +12V source.

   Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage from the controller when the key is in the ON position.

   Check the 'Bottom of Clutch' switch located in the same pedal box, as physical wear here can sometimes cause conflicting signal logic.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Sensor

   Remove the lower dash or pedal box trim panels as necessary to access the clutch pedal assembly.

   Remove the Faulty Sensor

   Unplug the electrical connector from the clutch pedal sensor. Remove the retaining screws or mounting bracket holding the sensor/potentiometer in place.

   Install the New Sensor

   Fit the replacement sensor into the exact orientation as the old one. Secure the mounting hardware and reattach the linkage/fork if applicable.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor and reconnect the battery.

   Calibration

   Connect a diagnostic tool to clear the 04.02.8A fault code. Depending on the specific tractor model and whether the part is a simple switch or a proportional potentiometer, you may need to run a clutch pedal calibration routine via the tractor's dashboard or diagnostic software so the Transmission ECU learns the new pedal travel limits.
