Massey Ferguson 04.02.8F – TRANS: Issue With Tyre Size Configuration

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected an invalid, missing, or mismatched tire size parameter in its memory. Because modern tractor transmissions (like the Dyna-4, Dyna-6, and Dyna-VT) rely heavily on accurate tire size data to calculate ground speed, manage shift points, and synchronize the 4WD front axle drive, an incorrect configuration will trigger this fault and may limit transmission functionality.

Applies to these machines

  • 7714
  • 7715
  • 7715S
  • 7716
  • 7716S
  • 7718
  • 7718S
  • 7719
  • 7720
  • 7720S
  • 7722
  • 7722S
  • 7724
  • 7724S
  • 7726
  • 7726S
  • Tier 4 (2015-2021)
  • 7700
  • 7700S

Check the cause

  1. Verify the exact tire sizes currently installed on both the front and rear axles match the factory-approved rolling circumference ratios for the 4WD system.

  2. Access the Datatronic terminal (Datatronic 4 or 5) or the SIS (System Information Screen) on the dash to check what tire size is currently programmed into the system.

  3. Determine if the tractor recently had a dead battery, a battery disconnect, or a software update, which can cause the transmission controller to lose saved configuration parameters.

  4. Ensure that the wheel speed sensors and the radar sensor (if equipped) are not damaged, as conflicting speed data can trick the system into thinking the tire size configuration is wrong.

Repair steps

  1. Power On

Turn the tractor's ignition key to the ON position (engine does not necessarily need to be running, but the terminal must be fully booted).

  2. Access Settings

Using the Datatronic touch screen or the SIS rotary dial, navigate to the Tractor Settings menu.

  3. Locate Tire Configuration

Find the sub-menu for Transmission or Tire Size Configuration (often represented by a wheel/gear icon).

  4. Input Correct Data

Select the exact tire size that matches your physical tires from the pre-populated list, or manually input the rolling circumference if required by the terminal.

  5. Save and Reboot

Save the configuration. Turn the ignition off for at least 30 seconds to allow the controllers to power down and store the memory.

  6. Test Drive

Restart the tractor and take it for a short test drive. Verify that the transmission shifts smoothly through its ranges and that the 04.02.8F fault code has moved to an inactive state or cleared entirely.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Controller

If the module has failed and cannot retain memory, the main transmission ECU will need to be replaced and flashed by a dealer.

  • Transmission Control Switch

    3796579M1

For Dyna-4 series. Common replacement item if the transmission is locking out of gears due to electrical faults.

  • Transmission Control Switch

    3795429M1

For earlier/compatible models. Common replacement item if the transmission is locking out of gears due to electrical faults.
