Massey Ferguson 04.02.94 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): CAN BUS Communication Issue Between Transmission And Arm Rest Module (TRANS)

The Tractor Data Bus (TDB) has lost communication between the transmission controller and the armrest controller. The system is failing to send or receive expected data packets between these modules, which can be caused by low system voltage, a wiring/connector failure on the CAN network, or an internal failure of one of the controllers.

   Verify system voltage by testing the battery (should be 12-14 volts) and verifying alternator output.

   Monitor controller voltage for both ARMREST BATTERY VOLTAGE and TRANS BATTERY VOLTAGE using a dealer service tool or the instrumentation display (TRANS VIEW -> BATT).

   Inspect main connector C137 at the armrest controller to ensure it is correctly installed, fully seated, and free of corrosion or pushed-out pins.

   Check the Tractor Data Bus (TDB) CAN network for proper resistance (typically 60 ohms across CAN High and CAN Low with battery disconnected) and check for shorts to ground or power.

   Power Down & Battery Check

   Turn off the tractor and test the battery and charging system. Charge or replace the battery if voltage drops below operating thresholds during load.

   Access the Armrest Controller

   Carefully disassemble the armrest console to access the controller and joystick wiring harness.

   Reseat and Clean Connectors

   Disconnect connector C137. Apply electrical contact cleaner to the pins on both the harness and the module. Reconnect and ensure the locking tab is fully engaged.

   Harness Inspection

   Trace the CAN BUS wiring harness from the armrest down to the transmission controller. Look for pinch points, chafing, or rodent damage, particularly where the harness routes through the cab floor. Repair any damaged wires using proper CAN BUS splicing techniques.

   Module Testing/Replacement

   If the wiring, power, and grounds are all intact but the communication fault persists, the fault likely lies within the Armrest Controller (or the Transmission Controller). Swap or replace the suspect module.

   Recalibration

   If a controller or joystick is replaced, use the AGCO/Massey Ferguson Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) to clear the fault codes and recalibrate the armrest lever/joystick to the transmission.
