Massey Ferguson 04.02.97 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 3 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 3

The transmission control system has detected a malfunction regarding the engagement of Range 3. The system is seeing an inconsistency between the command sent to the Range 3 solenoid (which hydraulically engages the gear range) and the feedback from the Range 3 engaged switch (which verifies that the range has physically engaged).

   Inspect the wiring harness connecting the TRANS1 module to the Range 3 solenoid and the Range 3 engaged switch for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose connector pins.

   Test the Range 3 transmission solenoid coil resistance with a multimeter to ensure it is not open or shorted to ground.

   Swap the Range 3 solenoid with the Range 2 or Range 4 solenoid on the transmission valve block. Clear codes and operate the tractor. If the code changes to 04.02.96 (Range 2) or 04.02.98 (Range 4), the solenoid is confirmed defective. If it remains 04.02.97, the issue is likely the engaged switch, wiring harness, or internal mechanical binding.

   Test the Range 3 engaged switch for proper continuity when the range is manually or hydraulically engaged.

   Park and prepare tractor

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, engage the parking brake, and relieve all hydraulic pressure.

   Locate valve block

   Locate the transmission control valve block (typically mounted on the side of the transmission housing) where the range solenoids and switches are located.

   Disconnect harness

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the Range 3 solenoid and the Range 3 engaged switch.

   Replace solenoid

   To replace the solenoid: Remove the retaining nut/bolt securing the solenoid coil. Slide the old coil off the valve cartridge. If the entire valve is faulty, unthread the valve cartridge from the block (be prepared for minor hydraulic fluid loss).

   Replace switch

   To replace the switch: Unthread the faulty Range 3 engaged switch from the transmission housing and install the replacement.

   Install new components

   Install the new AGCO OEM solenoid/switch and tighten to factory torque specifications.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the electrical connectors securely.

   Top off fluid

   Top off any lost transmission/hydraulic fluid.

   Use a diagnostic tool or the tractor's dash menu to clear the 04.02.97 fault code from the TRANS1 module.

    Test drive

    Test drive the tractor, shifting through all ranges to ensure Range 3 engages smoothly and the code does not return.
