Massey Ferguson 04.02.9E – TRANS2: Transmission Input Shaft Speed Sensor Signal Fault

The transmission controller is receiving an erratic, out-of-range, or missing signal from the sensor responsible for monitoring the rotational speed of the transmission input shaft. Accurate speed data from this sensor is critical for the tractor's computer to manage smooth shifting and precision controls.

   Verify the sensor is actually faulty by checking the wiring harness and connectors first. Look for chafed wires, loose pins, or corrosion. Moisture intrusion is a common cause of signal failure.

   Check the sensor gap and tone ring. The sensor must be positioned correctly relative to the internal tone ring to provide accurate readings. If the sensor has been bumped or if debris has accumulated, it can cause signal loss.

   Look for related open circuit (04.02.9C) or calibration (04.02.9D) faults which might point to a severed wire rather than a failed sensor.

   Preparation

   Disconnect the tractor's battery before starting any electrical work.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the transmission input shaft speed sensor on the transmission housing. Note: Access can be tight depending on the cab configuration, so having the right extensions and tools is necessary.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the mounting area around the sensor before removal to prevent dirt, dust, or moisture from falling into the transmission housing.

   Remove the Sensor

   Unplug the electrical connector and unbolt the faulty sensor.

   Install the New Sensor

   Insert the new sensor. Ensure it is seated properly so the gap between the sensor tip and the tone ring is correct.

   Seal and Reconnect

   Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring the weather-resistant seal is intact to prevent future moisture intrusion.

   Calibration

   Reconnect the battery. Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool. A transmission calibration procedure may be required after installation to ensure the TRANS2 module syncs with the new sensor's signal.
