Check the cause
Verify the tractor's battery and charging system. Low supply voltage to the transmission module can cause the ECU to log false internal software errors.
Ensure there are no accompanying CAN BUS communication codes (such as 04.02.B0) which might indicate a wiring harness issue rather than a failed module.
Enter the tractor's diagnostic mode (via the control panel or a handheld diagnostic tool) to view all active and stored fault codes.
Attempt to clear the fault code from the equipment's memory to see if it is a hard fault or a temporary glitch.
Repair steps
Reset the System
Using the diagnostic interface, clear the 04.02.E4 fault code. Cycle the tractor's key off, wait for the system to power down completely, and turn it back on.
Software Update / Re-flash
If the code returns immediately, the transmission controller's software is likely corrupted or outdated. The module will need to be re-flashed or updated with the latest firmware using an official Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool (EDT) by a certified technician.
Module Replacement
If the transmission controller refuses to take a software flash, or if the internal memory is permanently damaged (bricked), the TRANS module itself must be physically replaced and programmed to the specific tractor's transmission type (Dyna-4, Dyna-6, or Dyna-VT).
Parts you might need
(2)Transmission Controller / ECU (TRANS Module)
The exact OEM part number depends heavily on whether the tractor is equipped with a Dyna-4, Dyna-6, or Dyna-VT transmission. A new module will require dealer programming upon installation.
Transmission Control Switch / Joystick
3796579M1Fitment: Massey Ferguson 5700, 6700, and 7700 series. While the code points to internal software, control switches are sometimes replaced during transmission control overhauls.
