Massey Ferguson 04.03.11 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue (TRANS1)
Issue description
The transmission control system has detected an abnormal electrical current (amp draw) on the circuit responsible for the reverse clutch solenoid. This typically indicates an electrical fault such as a failing solenoid coil (internal short or high resistance), a damaged wiring harness (short to ground/power or open circuit), or a corroded electrical connector.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Locate the transmission valve block (typically on the right side of the transmission). Inspect the wiring harness leading to the reverse clutch solenoid for chafing, breaks, or melted insulation. Check the connector for water ingress, dirt, or bent pins.
Resistance (Ohms) Test: Disconnect the solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins. A healthy Massey Ferguson transmission solenoid coil typically reads around 8.9 ohms. If it reads completely open (infinite resistance) or is shorted (very low resistance), the solenoid is internally faulty and must be replaced.
Voltage/Activation Test: Check for proper voltage at the harness connector when the tractor is commanded into reverse (ensure safety precautions are taken). If no voltage is present, the issue lies in the wiring harness, relays, or the TRANS1 controller itself.
Fluid Check: Check the transmission fluid level and condition. Dirty or degraded hydraulic/transmission fluid can cause solenoids to stick mechanically, which can sometimes trigger electrical faults if the coil overheats trying to actuate a stuck valve.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and chock the wheels.
Clean the Area
Locate the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block. Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid with brake cleaner or compressed air to prevent dirt from entering the transmission valve body.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid.
Removal
Remove the retaining bolts or securing clip holding the solenoid in the valve block. Carefully pull the solenoid straight out. Have a rag ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may leak.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Gently insert the new solenoid into the valve block, ensuring it seats fully without pinching the O-rings.
Secure and Reconnect
Reinstall the retaining bolts/clip and torque to OEM specifications. Plug the electrical connector back in until it clicks.
Calibration
Use a diagnostic tool (like the AGCO Electronic Service Tool) to clear the 04.03.11 fault code. Depending on the exact model and transmission (e.g., Dyna-6), a transmission clutch calibration may need to be performed after replacing a shift solenoid.
Test
Start the tractor, check for leaks, and test forward/reverse shuttle operation to ensure smooth engagement.
