Massey Ferguson 04.03.12 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected an abnormal electrical current (amperage draw) on the circuit responsible for the reverse clutch solenoid. This typically points to an open circuit, a short circuit to ground, a short to power, or an internal failure of the solenoid coil itself. When this error occurs, the gearbox may shift into neutral when reverse is engaged as a safety precaution.

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness integrated into the gearbox for visible damage, chafing, or melting.

  2. Disconnect the reverse clutch solenoid valve connector and check that the pins are not disconnected, bent, pushed back, or rusty.

  3. Verify if the reverse clutch solenoid is receiving proper voltage (typically 12V) when the shuttle is shifted into reverse.

  4. Test the solenoid coil for an internal fault (open or shorted coil) using a multimeter and compare the resistance reading against a known good solenoid on the same valve block (e.g., the forward clutch solenoid).

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Relieve hydraulic pressure if required by your specific transmission model before accessing the transmission hydraulic block.

  2. Access the Solenoid

    Locate the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block.

  3. Replacement

    If the wiring tests good but the solenoid fails the resistance test or is shorting out, remove the retaining hardware and extract the faulty solenoid.

  4. Installation

    Install the new solenoid. Note: Keep the area absolutely clean during installation, as any dirt or contamination entering the hydraulic circuits can affect wet clutch operation and cause premature failure.

  5. Transmission Calibration

    Whenever a PWM transmission solenoid valve is replaced, or a mechanical transmission repair is effected, the transmission must be recalibrated. With the tractor safely blocked, hold the High and Low range buttons and start the engine. Wait for "CAL" to appear in the transmission display, then release the buttons. Set the engine speed to 1200 RPM (± 100 RPM). Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the clutch calibration.
