Massey Ferguson 04.03.20 – TRANS: Issue With Signal Voltage From Foot Throttle Sensor

Issue description

The foot throttle sensor (accelerator pedal position sensor) operates as a potentiometer. This fault code is triggered when the control module detects that the signal voltage from the foot throttle sensor is out of the acceptable range (typically above 4.5V or below 0.5V), indicating a potential open circuit, short to ground, or a failed sensor track.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the foot throttle pedal assembly to the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) for chafing, breaks, or melted insulation

  2. Disconnect the foot throttle sensor and check the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back terminals

  3. Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (usually 5V) and has a good ground

  4. Sweep the pedal slowly while monitoring the signal wire to see if the voltage drops out or spikes erratically (which confirms a dead spot in the potentiometer)

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Access the Sensor

Locate the foot throttle sensor assembly at the base of the accelerator pedal inside the cab.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor. Remove the mounting hardware (screws/bolts) securing the potentiometer to the pedal linkage.

  4. Installation

Mount the new foot throttle sensor in the exact orientation as the old one and secure the fasteners. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. Calibration

A new throttle potentiometer must be calibrated to the tractor's control modules so the system learns the new minimum (idle) and maximum (full throttle) voltage limits. This is typically done using the Massey Ferguson Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) or via the tractor's onboard 'H Menu' (diagnostic/calibration menu) accessed through the dashboard display.

  6. Clear Codes

Clear the 04.03.20 fault code from the TRANS module memory and test drive the tractor to ensure smooth throttle response.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Foot Throttle Sensor / Accelerator Pedal Potentiometer

Exact part numbers vary heavily depending on the specific tractor series and cab configuration. Reference the exact serial number of the tractor in the AGCO parts catalog.

  • Hand Throttle Potentiometer Switch

    4274087M1

A closely related component in the throttle circuit for these series.
