Massey Ferguson 04.03.2A – Transmission Control Module (TRANS): Transmission Output Speed Sensor Issue
Issue description
The transmission output speed sensor reads the rotational speed of the transmission's output shaft. The tractor's computer compares this output speed data against the input shaft speed to verify that the transmission is in the commanded gear and to manage smooth, precise electronic shifting. This code triggers when the module detects that the sensor's signal is missing, erratic, or out of the expected voltage range.

Check the cause
Use Massey Ferguson diagnostic software (such as Wintest) to monitor the live output of the speed sensor while the tractor is running
Check the sensor's electrical connector and wiring harness for corrosion, moisture ingress, or physical breaks
Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct supply voltage from the transmission module
Ensure the sensor is securely mounted and that there is no heavy debris interfering with the connection
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the battery before starting work to prevent electrical damage to the transmission module.
Locate the Sensor
The output speed sensor is typically accessible from underneath the tractor, mounted directly to the transmission housing.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the sensor mounting area and the electrical connector to prevent dirt, dust, or moisture from falling into the transmission housing when the sensor is removed.
Remove and Replace
Unplug the electrical connector, unbolt the faulty sensor, and remove it. Install the new direct-replacement sensor (no modifications should be needed).
Reassemble
Reconnect the wiring harness securely and reconnect the tractor's battery.
Clear Codes
Use a specialized OBD diagnostic tool to clear the 04.03.2A fault code from the TRANS module memory. Test drive to ensure smooth shifting returns.
