Check the cause
Connect Wintest diagnostic software and monitor the live status of the speed sensor on the gearbox tab to confirm if the signal is dropping out or dead
Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to verify the reference voltage at the harness connector (typically a 10V or 14V supply)
Perform a frequency test on active Hall Effect or inductive sensors by measuring the input frequency (Hz) across the signal pins with the engine running at approximately 1150 rpm
Inspect the diagnostic harness and connectors for continuity, corrosion, or damage
Repair steps
Locate the sensor
Locate the engine speed sensor mounted on the transmission housing.
Clean the area
Clean the area around the sensor to prevent debris from entering the transmission.
Disconnect the harness
Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor.
Remove mounting bolt(s)
Remove the mounting bolt(s). Be prepared for seized bolts, which are common on these external sensors.
Drain transmission fluid
Partially drain the transmission fluid if the sensor port is located below the fluid level.
Replace the sensor
Remove the old sensor and install the new one.
Reconnect wiring and top off fluid
Reconnect the wiring harness and top off any lost transmission fluid.
Clear the DTC
Use a specialized diagnostic tool to clear the DTC (04.03.44) from the TRANS module.
