04.03.54

Massey Ferguson 04.03.54 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / TRANS2: Transmission Temperature Signal Out Of Range (TRANS2)

Issue description

The electronic control system is receiving a voltage signal from the transmission temperature sensor that falls outside of its programmed operating limits. This typically points to an electrical failure such as an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to power, or a completely failed sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the transmission temperature sensor housing (often at the bottom of the transmission casing) for physical damage.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and check the electrical connector for moisture intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness leading from the sensor back to the TRANS2 module for chafing, breaks, or melted insulation.

  4. Test the sensor's resistance with a multimeter to see if it has failed internally (reading completely open or dead shorted).

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Allow the transmission fluid to cool to avoid burns.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Find the transmission temperature sensor on the transmission casing. Clean the surrounding area thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic/transmission system.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the sensor. Have a clean catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may leak out. Unthread the mounting bolt or the sensor body itself and remove it from the casing.

  4. Installation

Thread the new OEM temperature sensor into the transmission casing.

  5. Reconnection

Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks into place and is properly sealed against moisture.

  6. Clear Codes

Turn the tractor on and use a specialized Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the 04.03.54 DTC from the TRANS2 module. Run the tractor to operating temperature to verify the code does not return.
