Massey Ferguson 04.03.62 – TRANS1: Issue With High Speed Range Solenoid / Issue With Range 2 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)

Issue description

An electrical fault detected by the transmission controller on the circuit for the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53), indicating an open circuit, a short circuit to +12 V, or a short circuit to 0 V (ground).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) controller and the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53) for physical damage, open circuits, or shorts to +12V/0V

  2. Test the resistance of the L53 solenoid coil with a multimeter to verify if the coil itself has failed internally (open or shorted)

  3. Verify switch consistency by checking for inconsistency between the Range 2 switch (L57) and the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53)

  4. Check the connectors at the transmission valve block (right-hand side of the gearbox) and at the Autotronic 5 module to ensure they are clean, free of corrosion, and securely seated

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Valve

Locate the transmission control valve block, which is situated on the right-hand side of the gearbox. Identify the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53) among the cluster (L52, L53, L54, L55).

  2. Disconnect Power

Ensure the tractor is turned off and battery power is disconnected.

  3. Remove the Solenoid

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the L53 solenoid.

  4. Unbolt the Flange

Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the solenoid valve in place.

  5. Extract and Replace

Pull the faulty solenoid valve from the gearbox housing. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid and insert it into the port.

  6. Reassemble

Refit the flange and tighten the retaining screws securely. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, use the Wintest diagnostic software or an equivalent diagnostic tool to clear the 04.03.62 fault code, and test the tractor to ensure it shifts into Range 2 without slipping or logging errors.
