Massey Ferguson 04.03.69 – TRANS1 (Autotronic 5): Issue With Range 3 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected an electrical fault—specifically an open circuit or a short circuit (+12 V or 0 V)—on the circuit for the Range 3 solenoid valve (L54).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the L54 Range 3 solenoid valve connector on the transmission control block (typically on the right-hand hydraulic cover plate) for water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.

  2. Measure the resistance across the pins of the L54 solenoid valve to ensure the internal coil is not open or shorted.

  3. Perform a continuity test on the wiring harness between the L54 solenoid connector and the Autotronic 5 module. Check for shorts to ground (0 V) or shorts to power (+12 V).

  4. Verify the Range 3 position switch (L58) is operating correctly and not sending conflicting data to the controller.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Valve

Locate the transmission shift control block on the side of the gearbox. Identify the Range 3 solenoid valve (L54) among the cluster.

  2. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the battery to protect the Autotronic 5 module.

  3. Remove the Solenoid

Disconnect the electrical connector from the L54 solenoid. Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the solenoid valve in place.

  4. Install the New Valve

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the control block and reinstall the flange. Tighten the retaining screws to the specified torque.

  5. Reconnect and Clear Codes

Reconnect the electrical harness. Reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition, and use the tractor's onboard diagnostic display or Wintest/EDT software to clear the 04.03.69 fault code.

  6. Calibration

Perform a transmission calibration procedure if required by your specific model's service manual to ensure smooth shifting.
