Massey Ferguson 04.03.6A – Autotronic 5: Issue With Range 4 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected an electrical fault or operational inconsistency with the Range 4 shift solenoid (designated in OEM schematics as L55). The system typically logs this when it detects an open circuit, a short circuit to +12V, a short circuit to 0V, or an inconsistency between the Range 4 solenoid valve (L55) and the Range 4 position switch (L59).

Check the cause
Electrical Resistance Test: Disconnect the L55 Range 4 solenoid valve and measure the coil resistance. A healthy OEM solenoid should measure approximately 10 Ohms.
Wiring Harness Inspection: Trace the wiring from the Autotronic 5 controller to the L55 solenoid. Look for chafed wires causing a short to ground (0V) or short to power (+12V), as well as broken wires causing an open circuit.
Switch Consistency Check: The Autotronic 5 module monitors the Range 4 position switch (L59) to confirm the physical shift. Test the L59 switch to ensure it is not stuck or sending a conflicting signal, which can trigger the code even if the solenoid is fine.
CAN Bus Check: Ensure there are no accompanying CAN communication errors between the instrument panel and the Autotronic 5 module, which can sometimes cause false transmission codes.
Repair steps
Locate the Solenoid
The transmission control solenoid valves (L52, L53, L54, and L55) are located on the right-hand side of the gearbox control selector rail. L55 is specifically the Range 4 valve.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the exterior of the transmission housing around the solenoid block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic circuit.
Disconnect Wiring
Unplug the electrical connector from the L55 solenoid.
Remove the Valve
Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the L55 solenoid valve in place. Pull the solenoid valve straight out of the housing.
Install the New Valve
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the port and seat it fully.
Secure and Reconnect
Reinstall the flange and tighten the retaining screws to the OEM specified torque. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Clear Codes and Test
Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 04.03.6A fault code. Start the tractor, bring it to operating temperature, and test drive it through all ranges to ensure Range 4 engages smoothly and the code does not return.
