Massey Ferguson 04.03.6C – TRANS1: Issue With Range 2 Engaged Switch Signal (TRANS1)

The transmission controller is not receiving the expected electrical signal from the sensor/switch responsible for confirming that the transmission has successfully shifted into Range 2. When this occurs, the tractor may refuse to shift between ranges, drop into a limp mode, or refuse to move altogether.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the Range 2 switch on the side of the transmission housing for chafing, breaks, or melted insulation.

   Disconnect the plug at the Range 2 switch and check for water ingress, dirt, or corroded pins.

   With the key ON, probe the harness connector to ensure it is receiving the correct reference voltage (typically 12V) from the TRANS1 module.

   Test the switch itself for continuity to verify if it closes and opens properly when the transmission is manually or electronically commanded into Range 2.

   Verify the Range 2 solenoid is actuating. A failed solenoid will prevent the gear from engaging, meaning the switch will never send the 'engaged' signal.

   Park and prepare tractor

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

   Clean area

   Clean the area around the transmission range switches on the side of the transmission block to prevent dirt from entering the gearbox.

   Disconnect harness

   Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the faulty Range 2 Engaged Switch.

   Place catch pan

   Place a small catch pan underneath the area, as a small amount of transmission fluid may weep out.

   Remove switch

   Unthread and remove the faulty switch from the transmission housing.

   Install new switch

   Thread the new OEM transmission range switch into the port and tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

   Clear fault code

   Connect a diagnostic tool to the tractor to clear the 04.03.6C fault code.

   Test drive

   Start the tractor and test drive it, cycling through all Dyna-6 / Dyna-4 ranges to ensure smooth shifting and verify the code does not return.
