Massey Ferguson 04.03.78 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS): Issue With Signal From Seat Switch (TRANS)
Issue description
The control module is receiving an invalid, missing, or out-of-range electrical signal from the operator presence seat switch. The seat switch is a critical safety interlock device that detects whether an operator is physically sitting in the seat, which dictates whether certain transmission movements or PTO engagements are permitted.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the seat switch for any cuts, corrosion, or loose connections.
Ensure no debris under the seat is physically preventing the switch plate from depressing.
Disconnect the seat switch and test it using a multimeter. With no weight on the seat, the resistance should be infinite (open circuit). With an operator sitting on the seat, the resistance should be zero (closed circuit).
If the switch passes the continuity test, check for a damaged wiring harness between the seat and the Transmission ECU, or a poor ground connection. If it fails the test, the switch must be replaced.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Access the Switch
Lift, tilt, or remove the bottom seat cushion to access the operator presence switch located in the seat base.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the faulty seat switch.
Remove
Remove the old switch from the seat pan. Depending on the exact seat suspension type (air vs. mechanical), this will either be a twist-mount switch or held in place by retaining clips/screws.
Install
Insert the new OEM seat switch into the mounting slot and secure it.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical harness back into the new switch.
Test
Reconnect the battery. Sit in the operator seat, turn the ignition on, and verify that fault code 04.03.78 has cleared. Test the transmission and PTO engagement to ensure the safety interlock is functioning properly.
