Issue description
The onboard diagnostic system has detected an irregularity, malfunction, or missing signal from the sensor responsible for monitoring the rotational speed and direction of the transmission input shaft.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the sensor, the wiring harness, and the electrical connector for physical damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
Software Diagnostics: Use Massey Ferguson's Wintest diagnostic software to monitor live data from the forward speed, intermediate speed, and PTO speed sensors to confirm which specific sensor is dropping the signal.
Multimeter Resistance Test: Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check its resistance. Compare the reading to OEM specifications. An open loop (infinite resistance) or excessively high resistance indicates a failed internal magnetic coil.
Oscilloscope/Signal Test: For a definitive test, use an oscilloscope to observe the sensor's signal output while the transmission output shaft is rotated. A healthy passive sensor will produce an AC voltage signal, while an active sensor will generate a clean square wave. A distorted or missing signal confirms the sensor is dead.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Access the Sensor
Locate the transmission speed sensor. It is typically screwed into the front case of the transmission, positioned to read the speed of the input drive gear. Note: Depending on the specific tractor model and cab configuration, you may need to remove a rear tire to gain adequate access to the sensor housing.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the sensor. Using the appropriate socket or wrench, carefully unthread and remove the faulty sensor from the transmission case.
Installation
Thread the new OEM speed sensor into the transmission case and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Reconnection
Reconnect the electrical wiring harness to the new sensor, ensuring the clip locks securely.
Calibration/Clearing
Lower the tractor (if raised), start the engine, and use your diagnostic tool to clear the 04.03.83 fault code from the TRANS module. Test drive the tractor to ensure smooth shifting and verify that the speed readout is accurate.
