Check the cause
Connect the tractor to the Wintest diagnostic software to monitor the active and requested values of the transmission speed sensors
Inspect the sensor's electrical connector and the wiring harness for moisture intrusion, corrosion, water ingress, or physical damage
Test the sensor with a multimeter to verify resistance (specifications often call for approximately 540 Ohms)
Check for physical damage to the sensor tip or heavy debris buildup on the transmission housing
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the tractor's battery before starting work to prevent electrical damage to the sensitive transmission modules.
Locate the Sensor
The transmission speed sensor is typically accessible from underneath the tractor, mounted directly to the transmission housing.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Remove the mounting bolt or unscrew the sensor from the housing.
Cleaning
Thoroughly clean the sensor mounting area and the electrical connector to ensure no dirt or moisture enters the new connection.
Installation
Install the new direct-replacement sensor.
Reconnection
Plug in the electrical harness, ensuring the weather-resistant seal is fully seated to prevent future moisture intrusion.
Final Steps
Reconnect the battery. Use the Wintest diagnostic tool to clear the 04.03.90 fault code from the TRANS1 module. Note that some electronic transmission systems may require a reset or calibration procedure after a speed sensor replacement.
