Massey Ferguson 04.03.97 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 3 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 3

The transmission controller has detected a malfunction, electrical mismatch, or lack of response involving the solenoid responsible for shifting the transmission into Range 3, or the sensor/switch that confirms Range 3 has been physically engaged.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission side cover for rubbed wires, corrosion inside the connectors, or loose pins.

   Verify that the 12V control voltage is reaching the Range 3 switch and solenoid.

   Test the Range 3 solenoid coil for resistance (should read around 10 Ohms; an open or short circuit indicates a dead solenoid).

   Swap the Range 3 solenoid with the Range 1 or Range 2 solenoid to isolate the fault. If the fault code changes to 04.03.95 (Range 1) or 04.03.96 (Range 2), the solenoid is faulty. If 04.03.97 returns, the issue is likely in the wiring harness or the TRANS1 module.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the battery isolator switch.

   Locate Components

   Locate the bank of range solenoids on the side of the transmission housing.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoids with brake cleaner and compressed air to prevent any dirt from entering the transmission valve body during removal.

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical plug from the Range 3 solenoid and the Range 3 engaged switch. Remove the retaining fasteners holding the solenoid/switch in place and pull the component free.

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid/switch with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new component and torque the retaining fasteners to OEM spec.

   Electrical Connection

   Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical contacts to prevent moisture ingress, then reconnect the wiring harness.

   Calibration/Clearing

   Reconnect battery power, use a diagnostic tool to clear the 04.03.97 fault code, and test drive the tractor through all ranges to ensure smooth shifting.
