Massey Ferguson 04.03.98 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 4 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 4

This fault indicates a mismatch or circuit failure between the command sent to the Range 4 shift solenoid and the feedback received from the Range 4 position sensor (engaged switch). The system detects that the solenoid was commanded to engage Range 4, but the switch did not confirm the physical engagement (or vice versa), which can prevent the tractor from shifting into or out of this range.

   Ensure that the electrical connectors for the 4 range solenoid valves and the 4 range position sensors are plugged into their correct respective ports. (They are located in a bank on the side of the transmission and are easily mixed up during other maintenance).

   Check the wiring harness leading to the TRANS1 module for chafing, breaks, or corrosion, particularly at the transmission side block where it is exposed to the elements.

   Test the Range 4 Solenoid for proper resistance and verify it is receiving voltage when commanded.

   Test the Range 4 Engaged Switch for continuity to ensure it is physically changing state when the range engages.

   Prepare tractor

   Safely park the tractor on level ground, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.

   Locate components

   Locate the range change solenoid bank on the side of the transmission housing.

   Disconnect connectors

   Disconnect the electrical connectors for Range Solenoid 4 and the Range 4 Engaged Switch.

   Replace solenoid

   Remove the retaining bolts holding the faulty solenoid to the transmission valve block, extract the old solenoid valve, and install the replacement.

   Replace switch

   Unscrew the faulty range position sensor/switch from the transmission housing and thread in the new one.

   Reconnect connectors

   Securely reconnect the electrical connectors.

   Clear codes

   Clear the fault codes using the tractor's dashboard diagnostic menu or a dealer diagnostic tool.

   Calibrate transmission

   Perform a transmission calibration (Dyna-4/Dyna-6 calibration procedure) to ensure the transmission control module adapts to the new solenoid/switch and shifts smoothly.
