Massey Ferguson 04.03.99 – TRANS2: Issue With Powershift P Solenoid Supply Voltage

Issue description

An electrical fault—specifically a supply voltage irregularity, open circuit, or short—detected in the circuit powering the "P" solenoid responsible for powershift/range changes on the transmission.

Check the cause

  1. Test the resistance of the Powershift P solenoid coil using a multimeter to check for an open circuit or out-of-spec resistance

  2. Trace and inspect the wiring harness and connectors from the TRANS2 module to the transmission solenoids for rubbed wires, corrosion, or poor grounds

  3. Test the electronic switches linked to the solenoids, as switch failures can mimic a solenoid voltage issue

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Solenoids

The range change solenoids on the Dyna-6 and Dyna-4 transmissions are handled electronically via a bank of four solenoids mounted externally on the side of the transmission.

  2. Remove the Faulty Solenoid

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the Powershift P solenoid. Unbolt the solenoid from the transmission valve block.

  3. Install the New Solenoid

Fit the replacement solenoid (or solenoid kit) into the block, torque the retaining bolts to OEM spec, and reconnect the electrical harness.

  4. Calibrate the Transmission

After replacing transmission solenoids, it is highly recommended to run a transmission calibration (warming the transmission fluid up and using the dash screen to calibrate PowerShuttle progressivity and ratio shifting sensitivity) to ensure smooth engagement.
