Massey Ferguson 04.03.B8 – TRANS1: Issue With Intermediate Speed Sensor Values (TRANS1)

The transmission controller is not receiving a valid or expected signal from the intermediate speed sensor (TR25 or X483). This may occur if no intermediate speed is detected while a forward speed is registered, or if there is a discrepancy between engine speed, intermediate speed, and forward speed depending on the range engaged.

   Perform a resistance test on the disconnected intermediate speed sensor (should read approximately 450 Ohms +/- 20 Ohms when stopped; infinite or zero indicates internal failure)

   Check for alternating voltage (AC) at the sensor pins while the internal gear/ring is rotating

   Inspect the wiring harness between the sensor and the Autotronic 5 transmission controller for backed-out pins, chafed wires, or poor connections

   Use diagnostic software (like Wintest) to compare the intermediate speed sensor (TR25) against the theoretical forward speed sensor (TR2) and engine speed sensor (TR5)

   Locate the Sensor

   The intermediate speed sensor is typically located on the transmission housing, often above the differential ring gear.

   Remove the Old Sensor

   Disconnect the wiring harness and unscrew the faulty sensor from the housing.

   Prepare the New Sensor

   Apply a small amount of thread sealant (OEM recommends Loctite 5922) to the threads of the new sensor.

   Set the Air Gap

   Carefully screw the new sensor in fully until it gently bottoms out against the internal gear, then unscrew the sensor by exactly ¾ of a turn to set the correct air gap.

   Secure the Sensor

   Tighten the counter-nut to approximately 6 Nm to lock the sensor in place.

   Reset the System

   Reconnect the wiring harness. To reset the transmission system, move the PowerControl lever to the neutral position, then press and release the clutch pedal.
