04.1.04

Massey Ferguson 04.1.04 – Transmission Control Unit (TRANS / TCU): Issue With Signal Voltage From Clutch Pedal Sensor

Issue description

The controller detects that the voltage signal returning from the clutch pedal sensor is out of the expected range. This disables the Tractor Management System (TMS) or cruise control functions, and the tractor loses enhanced comfort control in final speed regulation.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the 8.5V reference voltage supply to the sensor. Check for a blown fuse (often designated as A013, fuse 03, or 05 depending on the model year), which is a frequent root cause.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness from the clutch pedal sensor to the Transmission ECU for rub-throughs, pinched wires, or corroded connector pins.

  3. Test the sensor using a multimeter to check the resistance of the potentiometer. The voltage should sweep smoothly without dropping out as the pedal is depressed.

  4. Inspect the mechanical linkage, including the clutch pedal sensor fork and pivot points. If the mechanical linkage is broken or loose, the sensor cannot read the pedal's true position.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the clutch pedal potentiometer, which is mounted directly to the clutch pedal pivot assembly inside the cab console.

  3. Remove the Faulty Sensor

Disconnect the multi-pin electrical connector. Remove the mounting screws/bolts holding the sensor and its mechanical fork to the pedal bracket.

  4. Install the New Sensor

Mount the new sensor, ensuring the mechanical fork/actuator is properly aligned with the pedal's pivot mechanism. Tighten the mounting hardware.

  5. Reconnect

Plug in the electrical connector and reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibrate the Clutch

Calibrate the newly installed clutch pedal sensor to the Transmission ECU so it learns the new 'fully released' and 'fully depressed' voltage values.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Clutch Pedal Position Sensor / Potentiometer

    3784361M1

Alternative/Superseded OEM Numbers: 4271809M1, 4290395M4, ACP0428530, 3653624M91. Often listed as an 'Axle Direction Sensor' or 'Clutch Potentiometer'.

  • Clutch Pedal Sensor Fork (Mechanical Linkage)

    411301050040

Connects the physical pedal to the rotary potentiometer. Often breaks before the electronic sensor fails.
