Massey Ferguson 04.1.09 – TRANS or TRANS1 (Transmission Control Module): Forward Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue
Issue description
The transmission control system has detected that the electrical current (amperage) being drawn by the forward clutch solenoid is outside the expected normal parameters. This typically points to a short circuit, an open circuit, high resistance in the wiring harness, or an internal failure (shorted or degraded coil windings) within the solenoid itself.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors running between the Transmission Control Module and the forward clutch solenoid for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose connector pins.
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance of the forward clutch solenoid coil. A healthy OEM transmission solenoid typically measures around 10 Ohms.
Check the wiring for a short to ground, a short to power, or an open circuit between the TCU and the solenoid.
Perform a component isolation (swap test) by swapping the forward clutch solenoid with the reverse clutch solenoid (or another identical hydraulic control solenoid on the valve block). If the fault code changes to the reverse solenoid equivalent (e.g., 04.1.0F), the solenoid itself is faulty. If the code remains 04.1.09, the issue is in the wiring harness or the transmission controller.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the system.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission hydraulic control valve block, which is typically mounted on the side of the transmission housing. Identify the forward clutch solenoid.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid. It is critical to keep things absolutely clean during installation, as any dirt entering the transmission's hydraulic circuits can cause premature failure of the wet clutch system.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the solenoid. Remove the retaining fasteners/clips and carefully pull the solenoid valve out of the hydraulic block.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining fasteners.
Reconnection
Reconnect the electrical connector.
Testing
Start the tractor, check for hydraulic leaks, clear the stored DTC codes using a diagnostic tool or the tractor's dash interface, and test the forward/reverse shuttle operation to confirm the repair.
